Life off the Road

After Willard and I retired we sold the house in Cedar City, Utah, gave the kids most of our stuff (sold some), and moved into a motorhome to become Fulltime RVers. What an exciting 10 years living on the road. If you are interested, you can check out the Blog I created during that time by clicking on Breakin' Wind in the upper right corner of this page.  In March of 2013 we were parked on our lot at North Ranch, Congress, AZ when Willard came back from walking Rocky one evening suggesting that we look for a place in The Hill Country and get off the road. I think we were both ready to settle down. So....we had a big yard sale, packed up the things we loved and needed, gave our friends a good bye hug and headed for Miller's RV Park at Johnson City, Texas to search for a place.

Now you might be wondering why The Hill Country? Well, back in the early 60's we lived in my hometown,  Alvin, Texas. Willard worked shift work at Monsanto and I was a stay-at-home Mom. We had three little boys.  Every time Willard got 4 days off we would head for The Hill Country. In the summer we would hitch up our boat, load the camping gear, and head for Lake Austin or Inks Lake. In the winter we would go deer hunting on our Deer Lease in Marble Falls. We still cherish those memories. Then we decided to go to collage, get degrees in education, and move to our favorite vacation spot, the mountains of Colorado. And that we did in 1974. We moved to Norwood, Colorado where we lived for 8 wonderful years. We would revisit our old Hill Country memories as we passed through each year on our way back to Alvin to visit with relatives. What would it be like to live here someday, I wondered.

We stayed at Miller's RV Park for a month. Each day we would check out each town in the area trying to find a place that fit us. We were looking for a small town, with friendly people, things to do, and a few acres (5 would do). At Church one Sunday John suggested we check out Llano. All we knew about Llano was that it was the Deer Capitol of Texas. The next week we drove to Llano. It was a beautiful drive. Wild flowers were everywhere we looked. Bluebonnets and Indian Paint Brushes lined the country roads. We stopped off at ReMax and hired Kurt to find us a place. After several trips, we found the people very friendly, it was busy, and it was the county seat. Although the shopping was minimal, you could buy almost anything you needed.  Kurt found us a furnished small cabin on 2 acres. It would do....we thought. However, it was a little over our budget and the owner wouldn't budge much on the price. Most of the other places we looked at the house was too big, there was too much land with it, it was too far out in the country, or the price was way over our budget. So, we got on-line and found a small house on 5 acres 5 minutes from town at a price we could afford. And our eldest son and family lived in Cedar Park only an hour away. We couldn't ask for more. We called Kurt to check it out and arrange a walk thru. It was perfect! We accepted their price and put our earnest money down. On May 15th we moved in with a new TV, recliner, bed, and microwave. The house came furnished with a new stove, fridge, washer and dryer. It would be our home for the rest of our lives. So we went to work to make it our own.
